What Are Vegan Hot Dogs Made Of?

Traditional hots dogs are a bit of a mystery, to begin with. (Seriously, what is actually in those things? We’re not sure we want to know!) So, we don’t blame you for being more than a little skeptical about the vegan version of the already unidentifiable meat! Thankfully, at Meatless Farm, we believe in honesty and transparency when it comes to our products – plus, it helps that we have nothing to hide – so we’re breaking down exactly what goes into our new Plant-Based Hot Dogs. Keep reading to find out what they’re made of, the benefits of meat alternatives, and how you can start making the switch to a more plant-based lifestyle today!

What is Plant-Based Sausage & Hot Dogs?

Plant-based hot dogs, not to be confused with plant-based sausage, are exactly what they sound like… the familiarity of a hot dog made without any animal byproducts or meats. So, what’s the difference between these two vegan meats? Well, given that they are made from nearly the same ingredients, the answer is not much. However, there are a few differences that should be noted.

  • Categorization: Generally speaking, “sausage” is a broad term from nearly any food that contains ground meat (or, in our case, plant-based meat alternative), fat, various spices, and herbs then stuffed into a casing. Therefore, a hot dog is a type of sausage.
  • Texture: While sausages and hot dogs are technically the same things, the texture associated with each of these foods is more nuanced. Usually, a sausage is filled with ground protein that is coarser or chunkier. A hotdog, on the other hand, has a smoother and more blended texture.
  • Spices: The final key difference between these two foods is the spices used and the overall taste associated with each. Sausages can come in a wide variety of flavors (think: maple, andouille, Italian), and typically hot dogs do not. However, our plant-based hot dogs are created with all-natural flavorings and ingredients from plants, making it a food you can eat with or without any toppings!

The Environmental Impact of Vegan Hot Dogs

While consuming plant-based protein, like vegan meat hot dogs, has been found to provide some pretty significant health benefits, one of the greatest benefits of a meatless (or meat-reduced) diet is the environmental impact this small change can have. Plant-based diets are associated with several positive effects on the environment, like preserving water resources, maintaining the diversity of plant and animal species, and decreasing the prevalence of greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. This is due to a reduction in livestock farming when more consumers (like you!) choose to eat more plant-based protein sources because chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cows are collectively the largest methane producers in the U.S.

At Meatless Farm, we’ve decided to put our money where our mouth is (so to speak) and move beyond simply creating products that are better for the planet. Now thanks to our flagship production facility in Calgary, Canada, we’ll be making our products in a more sustainable way too. How are we doing it? Well, Canada is the pea-capital of the world so having a facility here will allow us to grow, harvest, process and extract our own pea protein all within 20 kilometers. As a result, we won’t use as many resources to transport and produce our products. Plus, the facility uses cutting-edge manufacturing processes that enable a reduction in water and energy use by up to 90% when making Meatless Farm products. Talk about sustainability!
