All you need to know about Meatless Farm

Find answers to all of the frequently asked questions about our Meatless Farm products, with information on health, ingredients, recycling, storage, availability in South Africa and more.

Our processing facility is peanut- and nut-free and our supply chain is risk assessed to show there is no risk of cross contamination, however we do not currently do any testing to validate making a nut-free claim. Some people have been known to have a legume allergy (peanut is in the same family) and as such may react to pea protein.

Plant-based food is relatively new in South Africa, with research only starting into the best product options. Meatless Farm offers 5 years of global RnD technology that doesn’t compromise on sustainability and quality. Our production sites in the UK and the Netherlands consistently produce and provide the best product and ship it to South Africa in the most suitable manner. We’re always looking at how we can source ingredients both globally and in South Africa to become even more sustainable. We hope you join us on the journey, it’s the small steps that count.

Yes, our products can be reheated. Ensure your food is piping hot in the middle before consuming.

It’s hard enough getting some people to try plant-based food – imagine how much harder it’d be if they all had weird names and no one knew how to cook them. Giving our products familiar names removes a few barriers and gets more people eating more meat-free. And that’s kind of our thing.

What kind of sustainable planet-saving heroes do you take us for? Both the sleeve and tray that we use are widely recyclable. Plus, the tray is also made from a minimum of 70% recycled material. Please remember to always check your local recycling centre.

Yes – all except our chicken breast and chicken burger. All our products are a balancing act of taste, health and sustainability. Sometimes taste wins.

Our mince has 23.5g protein (about as heavy as half a golf ball) and our burgers have 17.1g (which is almost as heavy as a AA battery).

Yes. Our products are 100% suitable vegans, sometimes vegans, rarely vegans and never been a vegans. We want everyone to love our products.

Our mince uses soya protein concentrate to give it its fibrous texture and it’s also a good source of protein. So, until our team of farmers can come up with something better, we’ll continue using soya. We are working on our pea domination for 2022, don’t you worry!

Behave. Of course we don’t.

No allergens – just flavour. And bags of it. It’s made from salt, maltodextrin (a white powder made from potato starch), sunflower oil, Arabic gum (a natural gum consisting of the hardened sap of various species of the acacia tree) – none of which are allergens. In fact, the only allergen in any of our products at all is the soya in our mince and gluten in our chicken breast and chicken burgers. And that’s clearly labelled on the ingredients.

Our goal is world domination. Mwaa haha. No. Seriously, we’re working on taking Meatless Farm global, but until then you can find us in the US, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, UAE, Israel, South Africa, Egypt, Kuwait with more exciting regions to be announced shortly.

You can find more about our ingredients – and stay with us here – on our ingredients page. What a time to be alive.

We’re not your mum. We’re not telling anyone to be vegan or not to be vegan. And even though our products are vegan, they’re not exclusively for vegans. Our products are for everyone – and if we can get non vegans to be a little more vegan with some sneaky non vegan messaging, that a win for us vegans. Do you think we said vegan enough in this answer? Vegan.

Our main ingredient is a pea protein made from the yellow split pea. Which is great because we get to make rubbish puns like ‘Peas to meet you’ and ‘Peas out man!’.

You call it wastage – thousands of animals call it brunch (the posh ones anyway). We’re always looking to reduce our wastage at every stage of the process, and all our pea waste is repurposed into animal feed.

We had a crazy idea. What if we could get UK households to swap one meal a week to plant-based? And it turns out that little swap could be great for the planet. A new scientific data analysis has shown that if we succeed, the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions could be cut by up to 8.4%. That’s the equivalent of taking 16 million cars off the road each year. So, are you in?

We’ve launched this campaign because it’s important. And such a simple thing can literally change the world. Not in a hyperbolic, Youtuber ‘like, literally’ kind of way – but in an actual, very real literally change the world kind of way.

It’s based on peer-reviewed data from a recent study by Dr Joseph Poore, lead author of a recent global study on the environmental impacts of food. He calculated the environmental benefits of changing diets in Britain, comparing red meat meals versus their plant-based equivalents, analysing everything from production on the farm and lifecycle environmental impacts, to energy use, transportation throughout the supply chain, packaging and packaging disposal and food loss and waste at each stage.

We do have a farm. That’s where we grow all our magical yellow split peas, for our pea protein. We also chose the name ‘The Meatless Farm’ because it sounds cool and our plant-based products feel and taste like they have come from a conventional farm, but they don’t contain any meat.

Meatless Farm is coming soon to select Pick n Pay and Spar stores in Gauteng and Durban. Cape Town will be launching soon after.

We are focused on being as environmentally friendly as possible and we’re always looking to improve. Our ingredients are GMO free, and from sustainable sources and high-quality suppliers. Our soya for example is sustainably sourced from North America and our supplier is a member of RTRS (Responsible Table, Responsible Soy), an organization that is leading the way in sustainable soya production. We’re always looking at how we source ingredients and become even more sustainable. We hope you join us on the journey, it’s the small steps that count.
